Care of Lucky Bamboo :
- Lucky Bamboo with transportation :
During
transportation, Lucky
Bamboo may be some stressed. (notice from the leaves are not fresh)
Therefore, When you received the Lucky
Bamboo, remove the plastic bag and cotton absorbent that wrap around the
bottom of the stalk. Then put Lucky
Bamboo in clean water right away. After a few hours the leaves
will recover. The water in the cotton absorbent only enough to cover the
transportation period (less than 36 hours) only.
- Lucky Bamboo with water :
Lucky Bamboo
is hydroponics plants, all it needs is to have enough water.
Therefore add water when the water runs low. Do not keep the
water level to high, it will give Lucky Bamboo
chances to putting the roots too high on the stem. The root will
always pop out of the stem below the water level. While the Lucky Bamboo
does not necessarily have to be in a transparent container, a transparent
container better displays it hydroponics quality and promotes good water
hygiene. Use clean water
- Lucky Bamboo
can have fluoride
problems. so try to stay away from tap water. Fluoride in the water can
lead to top burn.
- If you cannot avoid using tap water, at
least let it sit out over night so that chlorine will evaporate this
will minimized the effect of chlorine.
- If possible change water oftenly (every
15-30 days) or sooner if it get murky
Lucky Bamboo with Humidity :
Humidity above
25-30% in best but will tolerate long periods down to 10-15%.. anyway, make
sure roots get enough water.
Lucky Bamboo with lighting :
Lucky
Bamboo will survive low interior light but would prefer bright filtered
light. Once it become acclimated for use indoor should not place in direct
sun or it will sunburn.
- Lucky Bamboo don't like too hot or too
cold : Avoid placing Lucky
Bamboo near direct sources of hot or cold drafts. A sudden change of
temperature from opening doors, windows, furnace ducts, wood stoves etc. can
cause damage to the plant. This damage may not show up right away.
- Bugs problem with Lucky Bamboo :
Even though Lucky
Bamboo is indoor plant, which make it have few pest problems. Mealy bugs
are usually most common insect indoor. Most problems occur on the
growing end therefore make sure that the top of it is cleaned. so
that it will not has fungus or rot.
- Lucky Bamboo won't go very big :
Remember Lucky Bamboo is a small plant. so
don't expect them to grow like big like Dracaena Masangeana. Especially when
you put it in a small vase.
- Fertilizer :
As indoor plant
which grow slower, Lucky Bamboo does not need
any fertilizer. If you need to put some. please put approximately 1/4 of the
recommended strength. Over fertilizing can produce burning of tips and
roots. And because it slow grower, it need less maintenance too.
- Cleaning your Lucky Bamboo : Use damp cloth to
clean the leaves regularly to remove dust will help not only make it look
better but also removing some of pest which tend to gather under the bottom
of leaves. But do not "scrub" the leaves.
- Shining your Lucky Bamboo :
You may want to
"shine" up those leaves with a leaf shine. Most plants have a
natural luster to their leaves. Continued use tends to block the plants
"pores" and reduces the plant's natural transpiration rate (or it
can't breathe).
Why my Lucky Bamboo leaves turn
yellow : Lucky Bamboo
with more leaves will required more water than the one without leaf. Make
sure you put in enough (but not too much) clean water to keep all the leaves
green. If some of the leaves turn yellow, it is sign of not enough water.
don't worry just put more water then use clean sharp scissors to trim off
those yellow leaves. And sometime the lucky bamboo just adapts to a new
environment. Do not worry the new leaves will grow.
- Why my Lucky Bamboo stalk turn Yellow or
Brown : There
may be the case that when the stalk of your Lucky Bamboo
turn yellow or
brown that mean it is dying. There is no specific reason why. It's just like
any other plants, sometimes they just die or you got a bad stem. You can try
cut off using clean sharp scissors cut of the yellow or brown part if the
yellow or brown still continuing. the only option is to replacing it. You
may also try to cut off sprouts from the dying stem and put them in clean
water, hopefully the root will start popping out soon.
- Lucky Bamboo with
pets :
Somebody asked me about will there be any problems with pets. Well, I never
hear any of them. And because no chemical is required for Lucky Bamboo. Also
very few bugs known. I don't think there will be any problems with pets.
- Should I cut my
Lucky Bamboo ? :
This is the most asked questions to me, the answer is "YES" use the clean
sharp knife or scissors to cut your Lucky Bamboo
anywhere you want, then put them back into clean water. in a few days (or
weeks depend on the environment) the new bud and root will start popping out
Lucky Bamboo
will not die easily !! (but if it will, nothing can save it !!)
If you have any tips
would like to add to this list. Please let me know. Thank you very much.
